EDUCATION IN NEW ZEALAND

General Information

New Zealand is a South Pacific nation, part of the Polynesian Triangle 
Its Population of 3.8 million people live mostly on the country's two main islands the North and South islands. In fact, most live in the three main cities - Auckland, Wellington, and Christ Church. While Wellington is the capital, Auckland is the largest city with a population of approx. 1.5 million.

Universities

There are eight government funded universities in New Zealand and all have internationally respected academic and research standards. 
All universities offer a wide range of subjects in art, social sciences, commerce and science. 
Students in all seven universities can work towards Bachelors, Masters, Doctoral degrees 
Most full year university studies begin in February and run through to November.

Polytechnics & Institutes of Technology 

New Zealand Polytechnics which are named Institutes of Technology are state funded. 
These provide post compulsory education that includes English language for international students 
There are 25 institutions, 18 in North Island and 7 in South Island 
They provide vocational education from pre-apprenticeship training to degree level courses 
Disciplines cover areas such as Agriculture, Art & Design, Building & Construction, Business, Engineering, Fishing & Marine Studies, Forestry, Science & Technology, Tourism & Hospitality. 
Most Full year courses start in late January or early February and usually end in mid- November 
In total there are 60,000 full time students and 140,000 part time students in New Zealand.

Visa and Immigration

Visas are granted for the period of study. It will also specify the course to be undertaken and the name and location of the institute at which the student is enrolled. A visa is granted initially only for the duration for which the student pays his/her tuition. Further extension of visa can be dome in New Zealand as and when the student pays his fees.

Work Opportunities

International Students pursuing Diploma & Degree programs may work for up to 15 hours a week during term time and full time during vacation.

Basic understanding of pre requisite exams in New-Zealand

•Proficiency in English language is considered as a positive indicator in assessing a student visa application.
